Today, I went to the Old City Cemetery. Right on the bank of the James, it is the site of a C&O railroad station, the first hanging in town, and the 2nd largest "hospital" in Virginia during the Civil War. It was established as a public burial ground in 1806, and an estimated 20,000 people are buried there, including many slaves, Revolutionary War soldiers, Confederate soldiers, two grandnieces of George Washington (one of whom was the wife of an original faculty member at UVa), and Marian Anderson's grandparents.
There is also a very cool swing that hangs from a very high branch.
